Violence escalates after Taliban takeover

Members of the Taliban movement in Pakistan carry out 32 attacks against Pakistani military and police in August – Pakistani army erected a fence over 2,500 km on the porous border with Afghanistan

Islamist extremists in Pakistan  escalated their attacks against the country’s security forces in recent weeks, adding to the fear that the seizure of power by the Taliban  in Afghanistan  will encourage armed groups in a similar orientation to the other side of the border.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban ( Taliban Movement in Pakistan, IST), as it is known, has many organizational differences with the Afghan Taliban, and the two factions have rather cold as sometimes hostile relations, although they are hostile to each other. ideology.

The JTI is the organizational umbrella of more than ten armed organizations operating in Pakistan. Some 70,000 people have been killed in their attacks in the last two decades.

Members of the movement carried out 32 attacks against Pakistani military and police in August, according to the German Agency for Recording the bombings and militant attacks for which the JTB claimed responsibility.

The Pakistani military has ousted Islamist fighters from semi-autonomous tribal areas on the border with Afghanistan, once their stronghold, forcing them to cross into Afghan territory with a series of large-scale operations from 2014 onwards.

But “there are clear indications that they are regrouping and increasing their ability to launch attacks,” said Fida Khan , a security analyst.

The Pakistani military has set up a fence more than 2,500 km from the porous border with Afghanistan to make it harder for extremists to cross from one country to another and has deployed forces to prevent attacks.

“We are ready for any eventuality,” General Iftikhar Babar , a spokesman for the Pakistani military, said recently , referring to the potential impact of the Taliban’s seizure of power in Afghanistan.

Mr Hahn predicts that the country will face further escalation of JTI action.
