Why Kanthiari’s protesting farmers aren’t going home

Must read

Protests occurred at Itumi-Kanthiari KTDA elections where voters claimed unregistered voters were allowed to vote.

The voters also claimed students were allowed to vote in some cases.

The voters strongly demanded a repeat of the election and urged Cs Munya and President Uhuru to intervene and ensure that the secret ballot system is free, fair, transparent and credible.

“Aspirant Mworia bribed election officials while all aspirant Musyoka’s votes were not counted. Musyoka was the most desirable candidate.

We strongly urge Cs Munya and President Uhuru to intervene and ensure that the secret ballot system is free, fair, transparent, and credible,” one of the protesters told BAITETV.

“Unregistered voters are casting ballots. Those who had previously voted returned to the polls to vote once more.

Students were voting in some cases. We demand that the elections be declared null and void and that voters be required to provide their identification number, payslips, and phone numbers,” said Karimi Ntongai.

“Voters from Kani Karui, Maua, Itumi, Uki and Mukololo were allowed to vote for Mukomo twice.

The elections were not transparent. Tea farmers preferred Beatrice, but those who voted for Mukomo are not locals and have no numbers.

We demand that the voting requirement be payslips, id number and the voter center. Elections should be held in a transparent manner,” said Stephen Kimathi from Kiegoi electrol zone.

“I’m pleased because a large number of tea farmers have shown up. The turnout is 80%. The only people left are the dead and the elderly.

We thank the president for his support, and I am very pleased that the voters chose their preferred candidates after much deliberation,” Gitonga Meme, a KTDA director aspirant from Kanthiari electoral area told BAITETV.
