A woman was arrested for allegedly trying to poison her neighbor in Kithiiri village, Meru County.
According to Murangiri’s wife, her husband informed her that he had been told not to welcome two teenagers, Muthomi and Kirimi who came to her house on occasion because they intended to poison her family.
She said she ignored the warning, but after three days, her instincts told her to prevent one of the teenagers identified as Kirimi, alias Kimeat, from entering my home when he visited.
“I warned him that he was not welcome in my home, and he met with my son on the way. He told him that, despite being barred from entering my home, he intended to completely destroy us. When my son reported him to me, I went after the adolescent and thrashed him mercilessly,” she said.
She said her friend, Mary, asked Muthomi why they stole from her with his accomplice despite being welcomed and offered food.
According to Murangiri’s wife, Muthomi claimed that a woman named Kanini approached him and asked him to collect poison and poison her family, but he refused.
“He stated that Kanini welcomed them to her home and inquired if my son ever visited. When they told her he didn’t, she told them she needed to send someone to do a task before going into her son’s house and coming out with something wrapped in a paper bag,” she said.
She said that Muthomi informed Mary that Kanini requested that they sneak into her kitchen when she was not present and sprinkle the poison on the tea and food.
“Muthomi claimed that she insulted him when he refused but Kirimi agreed to complete the task if she paid him. Kanini gave him Sh150 in exchange for the poison. Muthomi stated that Kirimi told him that whenever he wanted to poison the food, he would return to the gate because he realized we were a good family who cared for him,” she said.
She said that Muthomi claimed that he hid the poison for three days at their home and stated that his cousin requested that he return the poison to Kanini.
“When Kanini demanded to know why he hadn’t completed the task after he returned the poison, he explained that I was always at home. He claimed that Kanini put pressure on him for two days, and that on the third day, he informed her that he had learned that I was scheduled to attend a meeting at my son’s school. She asked him to collect the poison and finish the job,” she said
She said that Mutethia, a resident, requested that Kirimi collect the poison from Kanini and carry his phone with him so that she could be tapped.
According to Murangiri’s wife, Kanini gave Kirimi the poison when he arrived at her house and she told him that she expected sad news from my family by 3 p.m.
Murangiri said that Kanini was his neighbor and a friend. He said he took her to hospital on several occasions without charging her.
“I am grateful to be alive, and I have no desire for vengeance against her. Many people would have died as a result of my house being always open to close friends who serve themselves. Even if we haven’t drunk or eaten, tea and food are always on the table,” said Murangiri.
According to Peter Mithika, a Njuri Ncheke elder, the Njuri Ncheke worked with the police to apprehend the suspect.
“She is expected to be summoned by the Njuri Ncheke elders once she is released. Njuri Ncheke’s decision adheres to Meru traditions, but the police will release her on bail,” said Mithika.
Kanini’s Father said that when someone attempts murder in the Kimeru tradition, Njuri Ncheke knows exactly where to take her.
“Because murder is regarded as a serious crime in the community, the suspects are forced to bear the burden. I request that she be brought before the Njuri Ncheke to answer for her charges, and I agree to pay whatever she is required to pay,” he said.
Kanini was apprehended and detained at the Kagaene police patrol base.
