The river (called Setit in Sudan and Tekese in Ethiopia) has been filled with bodies since Saturday , according to eyewitnesses from the town of Wad al-Hilo in the Sudanese state of Kasala. “What I saw today was bruised and my hands were tied,” said one witness who spoke by telephone to AFP.

Tefera Tewondoros, an Ethiopian doctor working at a refugee reception center in Sudan’s border town of Hamdagit, said he saw nine bodies of men and women near the river today. “We also saw 28 bodies on Saturday and Sunday in Wad al-Hilo. “Most of them were men who had bullet wounds in various parts of their bodies,” he added.

The Ethiopian government assured on Twitter that these testimonies were “false” and that they were being promoted by the “propagandists” of the TPLF.
