Koome Calms Ruto’s Fears About 2022

Must read

Chief Justice Martha Koome has brushed aside pressure from Deputy President William Ruto and his entourage to withdraw from the committee responsible for preparing for the 2022 General Elections.

Ms Koome is a member of a special committee comprising various government agencies on preparations for the August 9, 202, General Elections.

The Chief Justice, who appeared to be a critic of Ruto and his allies, maintained that she had not violated the law in collaboration with other government institutions to discuss and plan on national issues.

Addressing delegates yesterday at the Devolution Conference that ended yesterday in Makueni County, Chief Justice Koome emphasized that the independence of the Judiciary was stable and unshakable due to its interaction with other government institutions.

“I did not include any politician who could undermine the independence of the Judiciary. We need to understand that the Judiciary cannot do justice in secession. I wonder what they would say if I were to meet with politicians,” she said.

The Chief Justice defended herself a day after Ruto’s camp complained at political rallies and wrote an official letter of complaint to her.

Ruto’s Camp says Judge Koome’s presence in the committee undermines the independence of the Judiciary.

The UDA says it will be difficult for the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Koome, to dismiss the presidential results if the results are contested and ICT threatens to have free and fair elections.

According to UDA, Ms. Koome’s move to become a member of the Committee has no legal basis, calling it illegal and unconstitutional because she has created a one-sided image.
